Every year, on the first Thursday after Corpus Christi, the streets of Kraków come alive with the vibrant and joyful Lajkonik procession. This centuries-old tradition, deeply rooted in local folklore, is one of the city’s most cherished cultural events.

The origins of the Lajkonik tradition date back to the 13th century, during the Mongol invasions of Poland. According to legend, Tatar warriors planned a surprise attack on Kraków. However, the brave raftsmen of the Vistula River discovered the invaders' camp and launched a successful counterattack. After their victory, they dressed in the fallen Tatars' clothing and triumphantly returned to the city, where they were greeted as heroes. To commemorate this event, a costumed rider, known as the Lajkonik, now parades through Kraków every year.

Dressed in a richly embroidered Tatar-style costume, the Lajkonik rides a wooden horse attached to his waist and leads a lively procession through the streets of the historic district. Accompanied by musicians, dancers, and revelers, he playfully taps spectators with his mace—a gesture believed to bring good luck. The celebration culminates in the Main Market Square, where the Lajkonik receives a symbolic tribute from the mayor of Kraków.

Each region of the country has its own unique dishes and variations of Christmas Eve (Wigilia) meals. Let’s take a culinary journey across a few of Poland's regions to explore some of the most beloved regional dishes served during this festive season.

In central Poland, a staple of the Wigilia dinner is barszcz czerwony z uszkami—beetroot soup with small mushroom-filled dumplings. The clear, ruby-red broth is both comforting and festive, often prepared with fermented beet juice for a tangy kick. It’s a must-have dish that represents tradition and warmth in the Mazovia region.

           2. Małopolska (Lesser Poland): Karp w Galareci

In the south, especially in Kraków and its surroundings, carp is a centerpiece of Christmas Eve. Karp w galarecie (carp in aspic) is a dish where the fish is cooked and then set in a gelatin-like jelly with vegetables and spices. Though carp can be found across Poland, this specific preparation is a hallmark of Małopolska’s festive table.

           3. Podlasie: Kutiya

This eastern region shares culinary influences with its neighbors, Belarus and Ukraine. One of the standout dishes is kutiya, a sweet mixture of boiled wheat, poppy seeds, honey, and nuts. It is both a dessert and a ritual food, symbolizing prosperity and remembrance of ancestors.

           4. Warmia i Mazury: Pierogi z Rybą

In the northeastern regions of Warmia and Masuria, pierogi z rybą (fish-filled dumplings) make an appearance on the Wigilia table. The fresh, local fish, often pike or whitefish, is used as a filling, creating a dish that highlights the region’s natural bounty.
While regional variations abound, what unites all Polish Christmas Eve feasts is their focus on tradition, symbolism, and sharing. Wigilia dinner is a meatless meal, typically consisting of 12 dishes to represent the 12 apostles. It begins with the breaking of the opłatek (Christmas wafer) and includes plenty of fish, grains, and poppy seeds, all tied to age-old customs.

As summer fades and autumn arrives, we begin to say goodbye to warm days, long nights, and the carefree vibe of summer. It’s a time to cherish the last beach trips, BBQs, and outdoor adventures while preparing for the beauty of fall.

           Welcoming Autumn

Autumn, in all its crisp and colorful glory, is a season that invites us to slow down, reflect, and take stock. Where summer is bright and energetic, autumn feels grounded and calming. There’s a rhythm to this season that encourages rest and renewal, as nature itself prepares for the coming winter by shedding what is no longer needed.

With cooler temperatures come cozy moments indoors. It's the season for lighting candles, curling up with a good book, or enjoying warm drinks while gazing at the vibrant tapestry of changing leaves.

           The Beauty of Seasonal Transitions

What makes the change from summer to autumn so special is the sense of anticipation it carries. It’s a time when we can appreciate the beauty of endings, knowing that they make space for new beginnings. Just as the trees shed their leaves, we, too, can use this time to let go of what no longer serves us—whether it’s old habits, clutter, or even outdated goals.

           Welcoming Change with Open Arms

Saying goodbye to summer can feel nostalgic, but autumn reminds us that change is not something to resist—it’s something to embrace. Each season brings its own unique beauty and opportunities, and autumn, with its crisp air and colorful leaves, is no exception.

So, let’s say goodbye to the long, warm days of summer with gratitude, and open our arms to the cozy, reflective charm of autumn. Whether it’s through outdoor adventures, quiet moments of introspection, or celebrations with loved ones, there’s so much to look forward to in this season of change. Autumn is a reminder that every ending carries the promise of a new beginning, and that even as we let go, we are also growing.

Planty Park in Kraków is one of the city's most beloved green spaces, offering a tranquil retreat right in the heart of the historic Old Town. This beautiful park spans approximately 4 kilometers (about 2.5 miles) in length, forming a lush, green ring around the Old Town, where the medieval city walls once stood. The park is divided into eight distinct gardens, each with its own unique character, filled with mature trees, vibrant flower beds, and well-maintained pathways.

Planty is not just a place for relaxation; it's a living part of Kraków's history. As you stroll through the park, you'll come across numerous statues and monuments that pay homage to significant figures in Polish history and culture, such as Nicolaus Copernicus, Jan Matejko, and Queen Jadwiga. There are also charming fountains, including the famous Wodozbiór, which was once part of the city's water supply system.

A Brief History of Wawel Castle

Wawel Castle's origins trace back to the 11th century when it was established as the residence of Polish kings. Its strategic location atop Wawel Hill made it a prime site for defense and governance.
One of the most significant periods in the castle's history was the reign of King Casimir III the Great in the 14th century. He transformed Wawel into a grandiose royal residence and fortified it with walls and towers. The Renaissance era further embellished the castle under the influence of Italian architects, introducing elegant courtyards and intricate interior designs.

The cathedral has been the coronation site of Polish monarchs and the final resting place of numerous kings, national heroes, and poets. Its chapels, crypts, and impressive Sigismund Bell are must-see highlights.

Born Karol Józef Wojtyła on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland, John Paul II's early years were marked by adversity and hardship. His mother's passing when he was just nine years old and the loss of his older brother deeply affected him, shaping his profound understanding of suffering and empathy.

His journey was not without challenges, navigating the oppressive regime of Nazi occupation and later communist rule in his homeland.

In Poland, for centuries, there has existed a beautiful tradition associated with Easter Monday, known as "Lany Poniedziałek". This unique holiday symbolizes joy, community, and rebirth, with its roots deeply embedded in ancient folk customs that have persisted to this day as an integral part of Polish culture.

The origins of the tradition of Lany Poniedziałek date back to antiquity when people believed in the purifying and healing properties of water. During the springtime, especially during Easter, this symbolism took on special significance as it was associated with the rebirth of nature after the winter snow cover.

In Poland, the custom of splashing water has been practiced for centuries, initially as a ritual for purification and ensuring fertility in agriculture. With the Christianization of the country, this custom became intertwined with Easter celebrations, symbolizing new life in Christ.

           Meaning and Symbolism:

Lany Poniedziałek is a day of joy and community, during which people gather around Easter tables to celebrate the renewal of life and hope for a better tomorrow. While celebrations may vary slightly in different regions of Poland, one thing remains unchanged - the joy of exchanging wishes, traditional dishes, and... water!

           Traditions:

The central element of Lany Poniedziałek celebrations is, of course, splashing water. Young and old, friends and family, everyone participates in this joyful ceremony. Traditionally used are buckets, watering cans - anything that can be used to splash water on someone. In some regions of Poland, there are special rituals and customs associated with this day. For example, in certain towns, processions with a figure of Jesus are organized, and at the end, participants splash each other with water, symbolizing purification and new life.

In contemporary times, the tradition of Lany Poniedziałek continues to enjoy immense popularity in Poland. Although this custom has evolved and adapted to modern times, it retains its original significance as a celebration of joy, unity, and hope.
For many Poles, Lany Poniedziałek is not just an opportunity for celebration but also a time for reflection on the tradition, history, and culture of their own country. It is also an excellent opportunity for social integration and spending time with loved ones.

When one thinks of Krakow, picturesque markets, the grand Wawel Castle, and exquisite churches often come to mind. However, the city holds somber memories from World War II. One place that serves as a poignant reminder of these historical events is Schindler's Factory, now known as the Museum of Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory.

The Oskar Schindler's Enamel Factory, played a pivotal role in the story of a German entrepreneur who heroically saved the lives of over 1,000 Jewish workers during the Holocaust. Schindler initiated this enamelware factory in Krakow back in 1939. In doing so, he transformed from a conventional businessman into a remarkable figure who jeopardized his own life to rescue countless others.

Today, this former factory has been transformed into the Museum.
This space is replete with exhibitions, historical photographs, and firsthand accounts that eloquently recount the narrative of Oskar Schindler and his exceptional acts of heroism. A visit to this museum offers a profound understanding of Krakow's wartime history and pays a poignant tribute to the individuals whose lives were spared through Schindler's valiant actions.

A particularly moving aspect of your visit is strolling through the factory itself, where many original elements are still preserved. This immersive experience provides insight into the working conditions of the laborers and allows you to emotionally connect with the atmosphere of that era.

One of the most famous and well-known streets in Kraków. Walking down the street among renaissance tenements, but also modern spots of our today’s world might be a unique experience. This particular gate is one of the seven gates leading to town. In the past also known as The Gate of Grace, because right there was the beginning of the road to the Wawel Castle. The gate served many functions over the years, for example, in the XVI century next to it was built the town’s arsenal, some time later we could have seen stables that were built inside the gate.

Floriańska street is named after one of polish saints - St. Florian who was a patron of firefighters, steelworkers and braziers - one of the most important patrons in Poland. His portrait is also located on the gate's wall. The street also is a part of the so-called Royal Road that was once a trail that noblemen, kings and queens used. No wonder - because of its architecture it is a beautiful sight that you want to see every chance you get.

At the beginning of the street is the famous Floriańska Gate with a small chapel underneath that is quite popular among tourists. going down the street you can already see Mariacki Church (and sometimes hear St. Mary’s Trumpet Call). The end of the street is connected to Kraków’s Old Town which is probably one of the most, if not the most, important things in Kraków.

Since the baptism of Poland in 966, the Catholic faith and the Church began to play an important role in Poland. There are over 10,000 Catholic parishes in Poland. The church is usually placed in the center of Polish cities and used to be the most important part of it. Even small villages have their churches. Krakow's churches are more famous and recognizable, so in this article, I will focus on unique churches near Krakow.

Looking at the picture above, you're probably wondering what a beautiful old monastery this is. It is the Benedictine Monastery in Tyniec is so close that you can easily get there, even by Krakow's public transport. The Benedictine Monastery in Tyniec is the oldest surviving monastery in Poland. The Monastery and Church of St. Peter and Paul is located on a limestone monastery hill on the banks of the Vistula River, and its construction probably began in the mid-11th century. Today, in addition to the abbey and the church, you can also visit the Abbey Museum and visit the library of the Abbey Publishing House.

A little further from Krakow is the Marian-Passion Sanctuary in Kalwaria Zebrzydowska where you can see this beautiful altar. One of the objects in Poland that is inscribed on UNESCO world heritage. The complex includes a cathedral and a monastery, as well as 42 chapels and nearby churches. It is often called Polish Jerusalem. Kalwaria Zebrzydowska is a unique monument. It's worth adding this place to your list.

In Wadowice, near Kalwaria Zebrzydowska, you can see this unique church. It's a town where John Paul II was born and raised. At John Paul II Square in Wadowice, there is a beautiful Basilica of the Sacrifice of the Blessed Virgin Mary, where Karol Wojtyła was baptized. The church is neo-baroque. It's worth going in to see the rich interior design.

If you prefer old wooden churches, our last choice should interest you the most. In 2003, another unique piece of Poland was added to the UNESCO list. Unique wooden churches are located in small villages: Binarowa, Dębno Podhalańskie, Lipnica Murowana, and Sękowa (as well as churches in Haczów and Blizne in the Podkarpackie Province). The churches located closest to Krakow are the Church in Dębno, the Church of Michael the Archangel, the Church in Lipnica Murowana, and the Church of St. Leonard. These churches have historical value and unique architectural styles (they combine Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque styles).

The customs and rituals associated with Kupala Night were to ensure health and fertility for those celebrating. Bonfires were lit in which herbs were burned. During the joyful games, various kinds of fortune-telling and dancing took place. In addition to jumping over fire and looking for a fern flower, various fortune-telling was also performed on Kupala night, very often related to love, which was supposed to help to know the future. Divinations were made from wildflowers picked in complete silence and from water in wells. It was also widely believed that people taking an active part in these celebrations would live in happiness and abundance throughout the year. In some regions, it was believed that until the Kupala Night, one could not bathe in rivers, streams, or lakes during the day, while bathing after dark or before sunrise cured various ailments, as the water was then a healing element belonging to the moon. According to beliefs, water and drowners and most other water demons liked to ambush thirsty people who unwisely take a bath before Kupala night. It was only after this holiday that bathing in the waters became relatively safe.

According to the legends, on the shortest night of the year, a fern blooms, and whoever finds, breaks, and hides its flower will have great luck. Legends tell of many people who wandered through forests and swamps, trying to find a magical one that bestows wealth, strength, and wisdom. Only one fern blooms in every forest, so hidden that it takes great luck to find it. Those who know miracles say that the way to the flower is very difficult and dangerous, that various fears hinder, defend, and do not allow and that extraordinary courage is needed to get this flower. This flower is difficult to recognize because it is tiny, ugly, inconspicuous, and only when broken off, it turns into a cup of wonderful beauty. However, it must be remembered that whoever manages to pick such a flower can have everything he wants, but he must not share his happiness with anyone, because everything will be lost at o

Another thing associated with the summer solstice are "wianki" (en. wreaths). Kupala night was also a night of pairing. In the past, marriage matching was the responsibility of the head of the family and the elders of the family, and the professional matchmakers they hired. But for girls who had not yet been engaged to anyone and wanted to avoid the customary form of matchmaking, Kupala night was a chance to win a lover. Young women wove wreaths of flowers and magical herbs, put burning sticks in them, and a collective ceremony with singing and dancing entrusted the wreaths to the waters of rivers and streams. Waiting below were the boys who, either by secret agreement with the girls or by luck, were trying to catch the wreaths. Anyone who succeeded returned to the celebrating group to identify the owner of the catch. In this way, the young couples could pair up without offending the custom, without exposing themselves to malicious comments or ridicule. On that night, they were even allowed to move away from the community together and walk alone in the woods.

On the occasion of this walk, young girls and young boys were looking for a fern flower in the swamps, which bodes good fortune. At dawn, they would return to the still-burning fires, hand in hand, leap over the flames. This leap completed the rite of passing through water and fire; on this day in the year of its time, it was likewise a marriage rite.

The most famous symbol of Krakow is the dragon (you can read the legend of the Wawel Dragon on our blog :) ). So it should come as no surprise that Krakow has its own dragon parade. Every year at the beginning of June there is a parade prepared by Groteska Theatre This year (2023) it will be the 22nd parade! Each parade has its own unique name and this year it will be WIELKI ODLOT. Dragons will take over Krakow for the whole weekend.

The biggest attraction will be the huge flying dragons, animated on barges and ships by the actors of the Groteska Theatre. This year's show will have an environmentally friendly formula as in previous years.

There are many beautiful parks in Krakow where you can spend time in various ways. Have you heard about the biggest and most recognizable of them? Jordan Park was founded in 1889 and was intended to serve the residents who could use gymnastic equipment, sports fields, and playgrounds. During World War II, the park was destroyed and then renovated, and is still used today. What's more, this park is located near the city center. After an intense day of sightseeing, it will take only 10 minutes on foot to get there and relax. It is located between Błonia Park and the National Museum in Krakow.

One of Kraków’s top tourist attractions is undoubtedly a salt mine located in Wieliczka. Wieliczka is a small town about 12 km to the southeast. Every year over 1 million tourists from all over the world visit the famous Wieliczka Salt Mine. They admire impressive salt sculptures, brine lakes, underground chapels, and chambers chiseled in salt. The first official tourist trail in Wieliczka opened underground way back in the mid-19th century. Since then, Wieliczka Salt Mine has been ranked a number one favorite thing about Kraków (by Cracovians) many times. There are several ways to visit the mine, however, the most popular is the traditional ‘Tourist Route’ which leaves from the Daniłowicza Shaft. The route covers the most impressive parts of the salt mine, including saline lakes, ancient mining tools, and majestic chapels and chambers.

The Wieliczka Salt Mine has worked for 700 years. During those years, a total of some 245 kilometers of passages, as well as 2,040 caverns of varied sizes have been made. The "Tourist Route" starts 64 meters deep and ends 135 meters below the earth’s surface. In 1978, Wieliczka Salt Mine was inscribed on the original list of UNESCO World Heritage. There is also a sanatorium for people suffering from asthma and allergy. It is situated 135 meters deep underground.

It starts at Level 1 of the salt mine (64 meters deep underground). We will walk around 2 kilometers, visiting around 20 breathtaking chambers surrounded by salt in all shades of grey, black, and white, and two majestic chapels. One of them is one of the most famous chapels in Poland – the Chapel of St. Kinga. The Chapel of St. Kinga is the heart of the mine. It is filled with amazingly illuminated religious bas-relief sculptures carved in salt. During the trip, you will have a unique opportunity to taste the salt on your lips, experience pure silence, and finally, listen to the stories of the history of the mine. Once the sightseeing is over, we will take the elevator to go back to the surface.

The oldest shopping mall in Krakow-Sukiennice

When you visit the Main Square in Krakow, don't forget to visit the Sukiennice Cloth Hall. The oldest shopping center in Krakow is also one of the most recognizable monuments of Krakow and a real pearl of Renaissance architecture.

The first Sukiennice Cloth Hall was built in the 13th century when Krakow became a city. This is where trade was concentrated, and the original cloth hall consisted of two rows of stone stalls locked at night behind bars to protect the newly created street from thieves. The brick and roofed cloth hall was built only in the 14th century, and its traces can still be seen today. In 1555, the building was destroyed by fire, but due to its very important function for the city, reconstruction began immediately. Over the years, the unrenovated building lost its splendor, and wooden sheds obscured its hideous beauty. In the 19th century, a thorough renovation of this building began, the effects of which can still be seen today. Despite so many years of history, one thing related to the Cloth Hall continues uninterruptedly. Trade continues there to this day. Stalls, which used to be filled with cloth, today offer souvenirs.

In addition to souvenirs on the ground floor, on the first floor, the oldest museum in the city is located. Opened in 1879, it focuses on the art of the 19th century and focuses on amazing Polish painters such as Jan Matejko. The museum is small in size, which means you can go there for a short visit and admire each element in detail.

But it is not everything. You can also visit the underground of the Sukiennice Cloth Hall. If you want to see what the Main Square looked like in the Middle Ages, You can visit the Rynek Underground Museum. Opened in 2010, it goes a few meters underground (below the Market Square and the Cloth Hall), where you can see excavated remains, such as original merchant stalls. This interactive museum gives a unique insight into the city and its medieval past. Limited number of people can enter the museum at once, so be sure to book your tickets in advance.

Now that you know something more about the attractions of the Krakow Sukiennice, we hope that you will also put these points on your list of places to visit. Being on the Main Square you have to check it out.

...every year, on the first three days of May Polish people celebrate Majówka - a 3 day so called „long weekend”, as it is combined of 3 national holidays celebrated day after another.

On May 1st Labour Day is celebrated. May 2nd is a Polish Flag day that was established a holiday in 2004. The 3rd - most important one, is Poland’s Constitution Day as it celebrates the declaration of the Constitution of May 3, 1791, the first constitution of Poland.
These 3 days are not only celebrated because thanks to them Poles have couple days off, but also because of their historical significance as it is a great time to reminisce and learn about polish history.

During Majówka you will see polish flags put up on every corner of the street and meet crowds of people enjoying a free sunny day outside their homes. As these are days off work and school and everything is closed, it is a great occasion for the locals to meet with their friends and family, go for a weekend getaway to the mountains or the sea, or just relax from the comfort of their own homes.

Kraków, even during bad weather, has so many attractions to offer. So whether you are with your family, partner or simply by yourself, you don't have to worry about weather ruining your trip, you can still explore the city, just in a different way!

Kraków has a great selection of museums to choose from. The national museum has 12 branches, located all over the city. The main branch is filled with breathtaking permanent exhibitions, as well as temporary exhibits that are absolutely worth seeing. If you are an art connoisseur, check out The Sukiennice Gallery or The Prince Czartoryski Museum, you won't be disappointed! Keep in mind that most museums are closed on mondays.

Not only can you visit museums, but also step by to some cafeterias or restaurants. In Cracow we have a variety of places for those who would like to taste polish cuisine but also for the ones who are eager to try different tastes. You will be able to find cuisines from all over the world. If you fancy a drink you can visit some bars and try polish beer or just stop for a coffee, tea or traditional hot chocolate with cream. What a perfect plan to visit some museums and then go for dinner and some drinks. To entertain yourself even more you can read a book or listen to music while looking outside the window and observe the rain.

A perfect alternative for a rainy day is going on a city tour in an electric vehicle known as meleks. Seeing the city from a different perspective, while learning about its history from guides, in your own language. You can choose which part of Kraków you want to see, for example Old City or Kazimierz, or maybe both, that's all up to you!

If you want to see the whole view of the city, check this place out. It is one of the five mounds located in Cracow. Kościuszko Mound was made to honor Tadeusz Kościuszko - a great patriot and leader of the uprising in 1794. It is located 3 km from the city center. It was built by volunteers, people of all ages and completed in 1823. Reaching a height of 35.54m. What's interesting, urns containing soil from the Polish and American battlefields, where Kościuszko fought, were buried inside the mound. Additionally, at the foot of the mound, is located the Kościuszko Garden. It refers to his great passion for gardening. There's also a museum, with a permanent exhibition titled “Kościuszko – a Hero for Our Times”.

The most beautiful of all - Krakow’s spring is coming!

It’s getting sunnier and sunnier each day, and that only means one thing. Spring is here! Here are a few ideas of how you can spend your day while enjoying the beauty of nature.

After a long winter of sitting on your couch and hiding away from the cold, moving your body and getting some activity would benefit both your health but also your overall well-being. So what do you say about getting on a bike and driving along Vistula river boulevard? It is a great way of seeing the city from a completely different perspective! You don’t have to worry about not having your own bike, Krakow has a good collection of bike rental stands all over the city, but mostly in the city center. When it comes to the prices, renting a city bike, even for a day, is quite affordable.

Another great option would be going on a hike! The first place that comes to our minds is definitely Zakrzówek. It is a great spot to take your friends and family and spend the day out in nature. It is an artificial reservoir, which used to be an old limestone quarry. The surroundings are breathtaking and you can even enjoy a view of the city. It is forbidden to swim in the reservoir, but how do you feel about diving? Kraken Diving Center has been running a diving base there since 1999. Underwater attractions lie at a depth of 5-31 meters and include, among others, a Polski Fiat 125p car, a bus, a van, boats, and a former changing room after the swimming pool. Under the water, there is also a granite plaque honoring Karol Wojtyła, who worked in the quarry during World War II. The maximum depth of the lagoon is 32 m but the visibility changes at the end of the summer due to the buildup of sediment.

Last but not least, the beginning of spring is a great time to go on a picnic! All you need is food, a blanket to sit on, and a smile. Krakow has a lot of parks to offer. I think Henryk Jordan Park and Błonia are the way to go. It was established in 1889 as the first public playground in Krakow. It is located close to the city stadium. Another option for a walk we recommend is Krakow's Planty, which stretches along the Old Town.

Which option is for you? Vistula Bike Ride, a hike, out in nature, or maybe a picnic under the sunny sky?

Easter is an important time of the year in Poland. It is celebrated and accompanied by many traditions, some of them dating back to pagan times specific for Slavic cultures.

One of them being Palm Sunday - the last Sunday before Easter. This tradition dates back to the time of Christ. It is a commemoration of the welcoming of Jesus in Jerusalem. Nowadays, a form of commemoration is contested for the most beautiful palm tree. Competitions are held in almost every town in Poland. Such an event can be seen, for example, in the very center of Krakow on Main Market Square.

On Easter Sunday - the most important day of Easter, families gather in the morning for breakfast. A true feast combined of eggs, sausages, hams, bread and cake. Before the meal, people share the wedges of blessed Easter eggs from the basket and exchange wishes.

In different parts of the world, this time is celebrated in different forms, but they all have one thing in common. Farewell to winter and enjoy the coming spring full of harvest. In Poland, we celebrate the first day of spring on March 21st. If you want to find out what kind of traditions are in Poland, be sure to read this post. Before we begin be aware of the weather during polish spring as it is unpredictable. One day there can be a heavy snowstorm and everything is covered in white. The next day can be sunny and warm and everything begins to melt. There is a Polish saying "W marcu jak w garncu," which is equivalent to "March comes in like a lion and goes out like lamb". Now that you know all basics we can move to the polish traditions.

There are many traditions associated with the spring solstice. The culture of the Slavs was characterized by a large number of joyful holidays and looking for occasions to celebrate. Any reason was good to celebrate, and the end of winter was the perfect reason to rejoice. Winter is associated with hunger, cold, and death. Over time, whole cycles of folk traditions, magical rites, and customs related to saying goodbye to winter grew out of it. One such cycle of rituals was called Jare Gody. Jare Gody was a time during which the Slavic god called Jarun or Jaryło was worshiped and that's where the name comes from. It was a cycle of saying goodbye to winter and hello to spring. Some of the traditions can still be seen today. Partly on the first day of spring, and partly as an Easter tradition (to read more about the Easter part expect another post dedicated only to these traditions soon).

An example of tradition, that comes from Slavic pagan beliefs and is associated with Jare Gody is the tradition of drowning Marzanna. Marzanna was supposed to personify the goddess of death, who was symbolically carried out and burned or drowned.

Marzanna's death symbolizes the end of winter and the beginning of spring when nature awakens to life after the frost. Today, children make puppets and on March 21st, the first day of spring, they drown them in rivers and lakes. In some regions, the effigy is burned first and then drowned, in others burning is omitted. Various superstitions are associated with Marzanna's drowning, also today: you must not touch the effigy floating in the water, because it can cause your hand to wither, looking back on the way back can cause illness, and a trip and fall - death within the next year. It is especially worth going for a walk along the Vistula on March 21st. Perhaps you will see this unique farewell to winter.

The beginning of spring means the first blast of warm air and nice weather. Everyone likes to spend time outdoors and catch the rays of the sun. Pupils and students also want to enjoy the weather. The tradition of skipping school on the first day of spring has become so common and popular among pupils and students that it started an unofficial holiday. The first day of spring is a Truant Day in Poland. Truancy is forbidden in Poland and to encourage students to stay that day at school, trips and various attractions are organized. Teachers usually conduct less important classes then. Often on this day, there are performances or other attractions related to the first day of spring. It is not a statutory day off from school, but due to the celebration of this day, many students take time off and play truant.

Everyone who visits Poland knows the Main Market Square in Kraków. Few people know that Kraków has several other markets worth seeing!

A few steps from the Main Square, you can see a second market. A Small Market - Mały Rynek, which was created behind St. Mary's Church as a supporting market to the Main Market Square. The Small Market has not always had this name and over the centuries, the Small Market has had different purposes and its name has changed depending on its function. Probably from the beginning of its existence, this market had commercial functions. The first name of the square was probably

, i.e. antique trade. Initially, old and second-hand items were sold on this square, after years, products that were too unrepresentative to have a place on the main market, such as fish and raw meat, began to be sold there. Trading there probably ceased only at the beginning of the 20th century, when a tram line to the Main Market Square was led through the Small Market square.

Rynek Kleparski (Stary Kleparz) is the oldest market in Kraków. This city square is located directly north of the Old Town, between Basztowa and St. Philip. Initially, the Kleparz market was the market of the city of Kleparz, since 1792 when Kleparz was incorporated into Krakow, this market has become one of Krakow's markets. In the old days, this market occupied a much larger area, similar in size to the Main Square. In the post-war years, and especially after 1980, Stary Kleparz was a very important point on the commercial map of Krakow. It was here that you could get once almost unavailable products such as veal or exotic fruits. To this day, this market performs commercial functions and has been operating continuously since the beginning of its existence, dating back to 1366.

Another Kraków market is Rynek Podgórski. The Podgórze market had a similar situation as the Kleparz market, which used to be the market of an independent city, in 1915 Podgórze and its market became a part of Krakow. A picturesque square with the magnificent Church of St. Joseph. During World War II, a ghetto for Jews was marked out right next to it, and on the square itself, there was a gate to it. Today, this square attracts with its beautiful appearance and tranquility. In winter, one of Kraków's Christmas fairs is held there.

Not far from Wawel, there is another market square, Rynek Dębnicki. Dębniki was a small village near Krakow. In 1910, the village was incorporated into Krakow and became one of the districts. Dębnicki square is a small market where trade fairs are held to this day, and it performs commercial functions as in the old days. It is worth going there not only for shopping but also to see the charming buildings and the surrounding tenement houses.

In addition to these markets, Plac Wolnica is also worth seeing. It is a square that is part of the original market square of the city of Kazimierz. In its heyday, it was as big as the Main Market Square. It is located in the center of the Kazimierz district, close to the former Jewish district. Currently, only the Town Hall has survived from later times.

Confused with bagel and pretzel. What is Krakow's obwarzanek?

Obwarzanek is a kind of circled bread sprinkled with various seeds, usually with poppy seeds, sesame seeds, or salt. Obwarzanek looks similar to a bagel but is thinner. The dough for the obwarzanek is divided into small pieces, formed into elongated cylinders, 2-3 of which are spirally twisted together to form a ring. The formed obwarzanki, with a diameter of several centimeters (12-17 cm), are left to rise again, then they are dipped in boiling water for a while.

means par-boiling in Polish and that's where the name comes from. They are boiled until they float to the surface. Then, after draining, they are decorated with poppy seeds, salt, sesame, or other sprinkles and baked until browned, so that they acquire a light golden to light brown color. The obwarzanek must be no lighter than 80 and no heavier than 120 grams.

The first mention of the appearance of obwarzanek in Krakow comes from the 14th century, from the court of Władysław Jagiełło and Jadwiga. Information about the existence of such a product can be found in documents from March 2, 1394. Initially, only selected bakers could make this product and only during Lent. Over the years, it turned into a drawing of the names of people who could bake obwarzanki in a given period.

Since 2010 obwarzanek is registered as a Protected Geographical Indication, so, this baked product has to be made according to a specific recipe produced only within the borders of Krakow and the Krakow and Wieliczka County and only then can be called Obwarzanek krakowski. It can be sold without labels and packaging, from points of sale marked with the appropriate inscription. Real obwarzanki are sold from blue stands on almost every corner of Krakow's street. There are about 170-180 such stands in Krakow, and the average daily production of obwarzanki sold on the Krakow market on weekdays is almost 150,000. Traditionally baked obwarzanki can be recognized by the characteristic bottom on which there are longitudinal traces of the grill.

In the vicinity of Stary Kleparz (about 10 minutes from the very center of the Main Square), there is Żywe Muzeum Obwarzanka, where everyone can try their best at making such a product. The workshops last about an hour, during which you will learn the history of obwarzanek and make your own one.

Did you know that during one day the bugle call from St. Mary's Tower in Krakow is played 96 times? Melody can be heard 4 times every full hour. Tradition says that the first melody is played to the south, towards Wawel, for the king. Then west, for the president of the city. Then for tourists, so to the north, where the Barbican is located. The last trumpet, east, used to be for merchants, now it's for the Fire Chief, to the Small Square. Each trumpeter is on shift for 24 hours and plays the bugle call 48 times during this time. On one shift there are two trumpeters. Only once did it happen that four trumpeters played the bugle call at once, to the four sides of the world. It took place on June 5th, 2003, on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the establishment of the Krakow Professional Fire Service. The bugle call sounds from the Hejnalica, the higher tower of St. Mary's Church. The tower is 82 meters high. To become a bugle caller, you must have minimum secondary education, the ability to play the trumpet, be a fireman, and have the good physical condition because to get to the bulge callers’ room, you have to climb 272 steps.

The tradition of playing the bugle call dates back to the Middle Ages. In the old days, the bugle call was a signal to open or close the city gates. Another function of the bugle call was to warn of danger, such as riots in the city, fire, or the attack of hostile troops. The melody suddenly stops at some point. Do you know why? Well, in 1241, the Tatars reached Kraków. According to the legend, the guard on the tower began to play the bugle call to warn the citizens of Krakow against the danger. He managed to warn the city of the attack, but he was lethally hit by a Tartar arrow. That is why the bugle call melody ends so suddenly - in the same place where the heroic guard stopped playing it. In 1927, Polish Radio started broadcasting the bugle call every day at noon directly from the tower of St. Mary's Church in Krakow. The tradition of playing the bugle call was interrupted during World War II with the entry of the Nazis. The Germans suspended the bugle call but resumed it on Christmas 1940. Back then it was played twice a day. Now the only exception to playing the bugle call are important moments for Polish people. On the day of Wisława Szymborska's funeral, the melody to the words "Nothing Twice" was played; and the death of John Paul II was celebrated with the song "Mother's Tears". On the anniversary of Marek Grechuta's death, melodies from his works are played.

You don't have too much time but want to see the essentials of Krakow? Instead of long walks around Krakow, a cart trip may be a good choice. In a golf cart-like electric vehicle you can sightsee even the narrowest street of Krakow, as its compact size can access the places regular cars wouldn’t be able to. The vehicle is heated and offers foil protection against rainy and snowy weather, so you can tour all year round. You will also be provided with guided commentary available in multiple languages to choose from. Stop at any attraction you like for as long as you want, admire, look around, take some pictures, and hop back in the vehicle to move on to the next location - take as much time as you want, there is no rush!

For whom is the tour? Basically, for everyone! Such sightseeing is especially suitable for everyone who wants to tour Krakow on short notice, as the vehicles are on demand and highly available - you will be picked up even within an hour from any spot you’re at. You don’t have time to sightsee? The tour is perfect for you then, as it takes less than an hour to see the whole Old Town, so it is a time-efficient way of touring the city. It is also a great alternative to long walks around the city, especially for people with mobility problems. You also don’t have to spend hours on planning how to commute around the city from one attraction to another, as the whole route is planned and you can just sit back and relax as you’re taken around the whole town. Such sightseeing is also environmentally friendly as all the vehicles are fully electric and don’t produce fumes.

           The story about Wawel Dragon

Centuries ago, when Kraków was ruled by King Krak, a dragon showed up in a den under Wawel Hill and terrorised people. They had to feed him with sheeps and cows, some people say that the monster ate nothing but virgins.

Desperate King decided to give his daughter's hand to the one who would slay the dragon. Brave knights began to arrive in Kraków, but none of them was able to defeat the beast. When the king was slowly losing hope, a young shoemaker named Skuba appeared at the royal court and promised to kill the dragon. The taunts of the knights did not discourage the boy, and the next day he stuffed the skin of a sheep with sulfur and left it in front of the dragon's den as bait. The dragon greedily devoured the fake sheep, and then the sulfur began to steam its belly. The dragon breathed fire and, in order to quench the pain, began to drink water from the river Vistula. It drank and grew until it became so big that it burst.

And in this way a clever, inconspicuous shoemaker freed Kraków from a dangerous dragon. In return, he received the hand of the princess, with whom he lived happily ever after.

Today you can visit the dragon's den. The entrance to the Dragon's Cave is located on Wawel Hill, in the courtyard behind the Thieves' Bastion, enter the small tower in the courtyard. A long winding staircase leads to the bottom of the cave where the dragon lived centuries ago. When you will be on the Wawel Hill, make sure to go to the western entrance to the cathedral. There are bones hanging above the door. According to records, they have been hanging there since the Middle Ages. Many believe that these are the bones of this legendary monster. Legend says that if a bone falls on the steps of the temple, the world will end. For this reason, conservators pay special attention to a very thorough conservation of chains on which these bones hang.

In addition to the dragon's cave at the at foot of Wawel, there is a bronze sculpture made by Bronisław Chromy from 1969, showing the image of the Wawel dragon through the artist's eyes. Not only the sculpture itself is very impressive, but also the fact that this dragon... breathes fire! Just wait a while. The dragon breathes fire every 3 minutes!

           Fat Thursday

(‘ tłusty czwartek’ in Polish) is celebrated the Thursday before Ash Wednesday and it symbolizes the beginning of Lent. It is well known that during this day, it is a must to eat at least one doughnut (‘pączek’ in Polish).

Statistically, every Pole eats two and a half doughnuts!

Doughnuts are made out of fried dough with a delicious and sweet filling inside. Usually it is a rose jam or a plum preserve. They are topped with either powdered sugar, icing or glaze, depending on one’s likings. Eating doughnuts is supposed to bring happiness and luck.

The origin of Fat Thursday and the tradition of eating ‘pączki’ is derived from paganism. During this day, people celebrated the beginning of spring, eating fatty foods, especially meat and drinking wine. Instead of sweet marmalade, back then ’pączki’ were filled with lard, meat or cabbage. With time, the tradition evolved to what we know today and our image of doughnuts,

as a sweet type of pastry.

In Lesser Poland, in Krakow, the explanation behind the tradition takes on a bit of a different approach. The genesis of Fat Thursday can be found in a story about an event called Comber Day. The name comes from the surname of the 17th-century mayor of Krakow, Comber. The storytellers described him as cruel and harsh, especially to the female street vendors.

He supposedly died during Fat Thursday, and that is why on each anniversary of his death people celebrate by dancing and throwing great parties. During which women made men dance with them and sometimes even made them take off their clothes as a form of punishment for how they were treated by the evil mayor, Comber.

We hope you'll love doughnuts as much as we do!
