Why visit Auschwitz-Birkenau?

Auschwitz is believed to be the world’s symbol of terror, genocide, and the Holocaust. It was established in 1940 by Germans, right next to a Polish city called Oświęcim, 60 kilometers west of Kraków. The story of Nazi cruelty and the fate of the victims is one of the saddest in the history of humanity. In the last decades, millions of people have been visiting a permanent exhibition, original camp buildings in the main part of the complex, and the most important sites in Birkenau (Brzezinka) to maintain due respect to the memory of the victims. During World War II, the Konzentrationslager Auschwitz was the largest Nazi concentration camp and extermination center. The camp took the lives of about 1.1 million people. Most of them (approximately 90%) were Jewish, however, there were also Poles (Poles constituted the second-largest victim group – around 83,000 people were killed or died), Russian, and Romani. They were prisoners from all over Europe. The Red Army liberated the camp in January 1945. After World War II, the Polish government decided to restore Auschwitz-Birkenau and turn it into a museum. The place preserves the memory of the concentration camp and honors the victims. During the visit to the camp, you can witness real places and barracks where the victims lived. Now, Auschwitz-Birkenau is a part of the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites. Each year, it is visited by over 2 million tourists.
